Minnie Mouse - The Fashionable First Lady of Disney

Mickey Mouse may be the official mascot of The Most Magical Place on Earth, however Minnie Mouse has unquestionably earned her way into the hearts of Disney fans worldwide.  Minerva Mouse, a.k.a. Minnie, first appeared alongside Mickey in a 1928 animated-short, Plane Crazy. Her sweet nature captivated her audience, but it’s also her fashion sense that sets her apart. Minnie is recognized for her signature polka dots and vast bow collection. She is uniquely feminine, sophisticated, and kind to everyone she meets. We forget she is an animated character and appreciate the happiness she brings to her fans every time we see her.

Minnie’s acting career began 90-years ago and she has been featured in 70 animated films. Most famous is her part in Steamboat Willie, her first commercial success. In the late 1930s, Minnie was redesigned—given full eyes and a cream colored faced. This new look was introduced in Mickey’s Surprise Party, which actually focused more on Minnie than Mickey. It would be many years after that before Minnie would be seen prominently in film. In 1983, Minnie she resurfaced in a minor role in Mickey’s Christmas Carol—restoring her place as a Disney icon. Her first starring role in a television special was in 1988’s Totally Minnie, where she does a duet with Elton John. It was over ten years later in 1999, when Minnie had her first starring role in a standalone cartoon—Mickey Mouse Works. Since then, Minnie has made numerous appearance in television, film, print and video games.

Walt Disney was the original voice of Minnie from 1929 to 1946, and there have been few for the job until the mid-1980s to fill the role. It is the voice of Russi Taylor, who has been Minnie’s voice since 1986 until present day.  And as life imitates art, Taylor met her future husband, Wayne Allwine, who voiced Micky Mouse at the time. Allwine was cast as the voice of Mickey from 1977 to his death in 2009. Most recently, Minnie received her very own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Mickey Mouse, received his forty years ago—it was definitely time for his better half to receive hers. Minnie brings the star count to 2,627 on the famed Hollywood Boulevard.

Katy Perry thanked Minnie for her world-famous fashion sense at the recent Hollywood Star unveiling, stating, “No one rocks a bow, the color red or a dot quite like her.”  We wholeheartedly agree!  Minnie’s original design was that of a 1920s flapper and her look has changed with the times. Her iconic polka dots have been celebrated since her first appearance wearing a red polka-dotted mini-skirt. Minnie created a pop-culture trend and fans can be just as fashionable in any number of her clothing designs. Her Dress Shop Collection features vintage style Sweetheart dresses, along with her iconic white gloves—complete with red polka dot bows.  Minnie even has fashions for those wanting to look more sporty with her cheerleading uniform.

Fashion designers at Coach have recently renewed their partnership with Disney giving Minnie Mouse fans designer handbags, jackets, and accessories. Handbags are designed with Minnie ears and her vintage patches embellish wallets, purses, backpacks, and motorcycle jackets—because Minnie is sassy like that. CEO of the Walt Disney Company, Bob Iger, was correct when he said that Minnie is “…a bona fide fashion icon, a muse for some of the world’s greatest designers, a star of runways in New York, Paris, and Tokyo.” We couldn’t agree more!

There are no shortage of ways to accessorize the Minnie Mouse look with her collection of bows that attach to her headbands. Wear her traditional dots to designs inspired by Disney themed characters such as Aurora, Maleficent, or Wonderland’s Cheshire Cat. Her variety of headbands sparkle, glow, light up, and shimmer. You can even be a Minnie bride or princess with an assortment of draped tulle in a variety of colors. Even her ears range in colors such as purple, blue, pink, or if you’re feeling adventurous, zebra stripped. Minnie Ears easily go with everything!

If you’re looking to new places to wear Minnie, her jewelry collection is the perfect way to accent your outfit. From the simple charm bracelet to a diamond necklace, she will make you sparkle! The wide-array of designs and jewelry pieces include her signature bow, polka dots, or images of Minnie herself. Fashion watches come in Minnie red and offer a variety of styles from classic to whimsical to get you there on time. Her jewelry is available at a variety of retailers, including of course, Disney stores.

And for those just as obsessed as we are, how about a Minnie Van? Getting around Walt Disney World Resorts has never been more fashionable! Disney’s Minnie Van service will take you anywhere you and five guests want to go in the Disney World Resort. There are even two carseats available for your smallest passengers.
